Grand Hotel made movie history in 1932 when MGM decided to bring many of its big names together to create Hollywood’s first all-star melodrama. Though none of them won individually, provocative performances by Greta Garbo, John and Lionel Barrymore, Joan Crawford and Wallace Beery helped this film win the Best Picture Oscar. In 1992 for the stage, a Broadway director/choreographer, Tommy Tune, used a seamless cinematic style similar to West Side Story to weave together the many lives of the inhabitants of a famous hotel in Berlin during the ’20s. With war approaching, the jitterbug became more frenetic, and the partner dancing became sexy and intense, as the company moved to the award winning dramatic score by Wright and Forrest (Kismet and Song of Norway) and our own Maury Yeston (TitanicPhantom! and Nine). Grand Hotel received a record 12 Tony nominations.
