After great success with West Side Story, Maine State Music Theatre is continuing its 49th musical season with the light-hearted, romantic comedy Thoroughly Modern Millie. Based on the 1967 movie of the same name, the film featured stars from cinema, stage, and television(Julie Andrews, Carol Channing and Mary Tyler Moore), received 6 Academy Award nominations and became one of the top moneymaking films of 1967. With many songs added, this affectionate backward glance at the jazzy ’20s was reconceived for Broadway in 2002 and won 6 Tonys, including Best Musical. The story of a Midwestern girl who journeys to New York with the dream of reinventing herself by marrying her rich boss isn’t a new one. Adding a subplot of a "white slave" kidnapping ring headed by a Caucasian actress pretending to be a Chinese landlady (Beatrice Lillie in the movie, Tony-winning Harriet Harris onstage) adds the comedic spice to the many romantic couplings.
