It’s been fifteen years since MSMT produced this reverential treatment of the last seven days of Jesus of Nazareth told in contemporary terms.
Though we know this to be a great story about faith and religion, it is fascinating how much of it is also political. We hear Judas’ fears of a volatile future even as the other Apostles quiz Jesus on his campaign plans. We watch as Caiaphas and the Priests, feeling threatened by the following Jesus has attained, lobby Pilate and the Roman authority to discipline him. Because of her past, Mary Magdalene’s devotion to Jesus is misinterpreted and slandered by Judas. King Herod wants this new messiah to perform for him, and when Jesus refuses, Herod becomes yet another power figure against him. Money changes hands. Supporters flee his camp. Jesus is arrested, mocked and tortured by the very people who followed him, and ultimately executed.
Come hear the music that attained national popularity well before it opened on Broadway: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s uncanny blending of rock with "the greatest story ever told".
