Production Manager

MAINE STATE MUSIC THEATRE (MSMT) is seeking a full-time, year-round,  detail-oriented and experienced individual to serve as PRODUCTION MANAGER.

Maine State Music Theatre (MSMT) is an AEA Corst X summer musical theatre company.  MSMT was created in 1958 by Victoria Crandall.  The theatre has progressed from the Brunswick Playhouse to a $4.4 million company. The productions are performed at the Pickard theater, a 598-seat venue, on the Bowdoin College Campus, which reaches over 56,000 patrons through over 100 performances annually.  MSMT has become Maine’s preeminent theatre company producing musicals, concerts and Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) productions along with co-productions with theatres both in and out of the state of Maine.


The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing all technical and production aspects of MSMT’s main stage shows, concerts, events, co-productions and TYA productions. This position is integral to the design and technical execution of all production elements, serving as the main liaison between guest designers, production staff and off-season projects.  The position requires impeccable communication, budget management, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to foster a collaborative and innovative environment that supports the artistic vision of the organization.  The Production Manager reports to the Artistic Director and Managing Director and is responsible for supporting the artistic and financial goals of MSMT.

Production Manager Responsibilities (but not limited too):

  • Realizing the vision of the theatre and each individual production as seen by the Artistic Director
  • Oversee, schedule and facilitate the load-ins, strikes, technical and dress rehearsals and preview
  • performances of the Mainstage, Concert Series and TYA productions
  • Help with summer employee search in tandem with the Artistic Director and Company Manager
  • Attend job fairs, SETC & USITT, with the Artistic Director
  • Securing Overhire staff for load ins, strikes and in shows as needed
  • Providing motivation and training for the technical and overhire staff
  • Oversee the production schedule and ensure all production and design deadlines are met
  • Oversee and support the scenic construction of all productions
  • Operate, maintain and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre
  • Managing and maintaining production budgets, deadlines, and schedules. Assisting the Managing Director and Artistic Director with the production budget breakdown for all productions. Holding fiscal responsibility for the production budget
  • Maintaining good working relationships with vendors
  • Monitor the condition of MSMT owned equipment and rental equipment arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Scheduling and chairing all necessary production meetings.Actively participate in designated meetings and training sessions
  • Acting as a liaison between the Managing Director, Artistic Director, show director, designers and
  • production staff
  • Work with the design staff of each production to meet their needs and execute their designs, as assigned Artistic Director
  • Working with the Educational Director in overseeing Intern/Apprentice/Journeyperson assignments in production areas
  • Determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for performances in advance of production dates
  • Advise stage managers and designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs
  • Oversee and track the budget of the technical departments
  • Make recommendations to Artistic Director and Managing Director regarding capital purchases of technical equipment
  • Maintain a clean and tidy facility which includes the scene shop, props shop etc.
  • Remain current on technical advancements in design and production, and evolving best practices in production, and all computer software
  • Build sets and props during off season for TYA and Monday Concerts
  • Contribute to a professional, motivating and friendly work environment for all company members and vendors website updated with all current theater specs, prices, calendar/availability, and photos
  • Keep inventory of props, stock set pieces, costumes, lighting, video, and sound equipment and up-to-date paperwork to share with all Teaching Artists, Production Staff, and collaborators as necessary
  • Basic knowledge and experience in trades such as painting, plumbing, lighting, simple carpentry, and seat repair
  • Off season projects

The ideal candidate would possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Seven years of experience in production management and/or technical theatre
  • Substantial portfolio of Technical Direction, Production Design, and Theater Management
  • Administrative and management experience in comparable environment
  • Strong management, communications, leadership and organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of up to date technical software and programs
  • Familiarity with Theatre and/or Performing Arts required
  • Proven track record of successful production management
  • Willingness to ensure high-quality work in every aspect of production
  • Enthusiasm for the performing arts
  • A positive can-do attitude

This is a salaried full-time, year-round position and includes health insurance, vacation time, sick time and 403B program. Weekend and evening hours are required.
