Scene Shop

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

  • Position(s): 1
  • Dates Remote: Mon May 8 – Sun May 14
  • Dates: Tues May 16 – Mon August 28
  • Pay: $1,000.00 a week, salaried position
  • Housing: Shared housing provided.  Housing has basic furnishings, is collegiate style, with possible shared bedrooms
  • Travel: Not provided
  • Location: Brunswick, ME

Primary Responsibilities

Essential functions include (but are not limited to):

  • Supervise a staff of 5 and any overhire
  • Work with Designers and the Artistic teams for each production to realize their vision
  • Create build schedules and calendars; design and engineer scenery; design/build/install automation, rigging, and theatrical effects in accordance with MSMT’s Scenery Standard Guidelines
  • Build, install and perform maintenance on all sets for all productions
  • Physically work on the build as needed
  • Coordinate and organize with all production departments for builds, load-ins, and strikes for all productions
  • Coordinate and organize all load-in/strike/load-out with the Stage Operations Department
  • Maintain and repair all equipment, supplies, and stock items
  • Purchase equipment, materials, supplies, and any related equipment
  • Coordinate and organize the daily cleaning and upkeep of the scene shop and its equipment
  • Attend all run-throughs, backstage prep, all technical rehearsals, performances, load ins, and strikes as scheduled
  • Maintain budgets and cost estimations
  • Attend all production meetings
  • Participate in MSMT events as needed and/or required
  • Adhere to all MSMT policies and procedures including Covid 19 Guidelines & Safety protocols
  • Drive MSMT vehicles and box trucks
  • Motivate with a positive and respectful attitude
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and respectful working environment
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Production and MSMT Annual Staff

Qualifications

The following skills and experience are required:

  • Superior knowledge and experience with CAD and Manual Technical Design Drafting
  • Superior knowledge and experience with Technical Design and Engineering
  • Knowledge and experience of Creative Conners Automation Systems
  • Knowledge and experience with advanced rigging systems and flying effects
  • Construction experience using woodworking, framing, and finish carpentry; metal work and welding; soft goods and sewing skills; small motors, mechanisms, and electronics; pneumatics and hydraulics
  • Training in the safe operation of stationary and portable power tools and hand tools
  • Ability to read and interpret working drawings
  • Budget management skills
  • Aptitude for creative technical and artistic problem solving
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and any applicable software
  • Able to manage teams and foster both team and individual growth among employees
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, time management, multi-tasking, problem solving, and communication skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, energized, and quickly changing environment
  • Able to work independently and as a team player
  • Detail oriented; able to prioritize efficiently and multi-task
  • Driver’s license and clean driving record required

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

  • Position(s): 1

  • Assist TD in day-to-day operations of the Scene Shop
  • Supervise a staff of 4 and any overhire
  • Work with Designers and the Artistic teams for each production to realize their vision
  • Assist with creating build schedules and calendars; design and engineer scenery; design/build/install automation, rigging, and theatrical effects in accordance with MSMT’s Scenery Standard Guidelines

HEAD CARPENTER AND FABRICATOR

  • Dates: Tues May 23 – Sun August 27
  • Pay: $825.00 a week, salaried position
  • Housing: Shared housing provided.  Housing has basic furnishings, is collegiate style, with shared bedrooms
  • Travel: Not provided
  • Location: Brunswick, ME

Primary Responsibilities

Essential functions include (but are not limited to):

  • Supervise a staff of 3 and any overhire
  • Assign and supervise all scenery construction projects for scenery technicians
  • Work with Designers and the Artistic teams for each production to realize their vision
  • Build, install and perform maintenance on all sets for all productions
  • Lead fabricator on all metal projects assigned by the TD
  • Lead carpenter on all projects as assigned by the TD
  • Physically work on the build
  • Conduct quality control and safety inspections for all scenery construction projects
  • Assist coordinating/organizing all production departments for builds, load-ins, and strikes
  • Assist coordinating/organizing all load-in/strike/load-out with the Stage Operations Department
  • Maintain and repair all equipment, supplies, and stock items
  • Assist with the daily cleaning and upkeep of the scene shop and its equipment
  • Attend/assist with all run-throughs, backstage prep, all technical rehearsals, performances, load ins, and strikes as scheduled
  • Participate in MSMT events as needed and/or required
  • Adhere to all MSMT policies and procedures including Covid 19 Guidelines & Safety protocols

  • Construction experience using woodworking, framing, and finish carpentry; metal work and welding; soft goods and sewing skills; small motors, mechanisms, and electronics; pneumatics and hydraulics
  • Training in the safe operation of stationary and portable power tools and hand tools
  • Ability to read and interpret working drawings
  • Aptitude for creative technical and artistic problem solving
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and any applicable software
  • Able to manage teams and foster both team and individual growth among employees

  • Position(s): 3
  • Dates: Tues May 23 – Sun August 27
  • Pay: $15.00 an hour, hourly position
  • Housing: Shared housing shall be provided for a fee of $75.00 a week.  The housing fee shall be deducted weekly from the employee’s paycheck.  Housing has basic furnishings, is collegiate style, with shared bedrooms
  • Travel: Not provided
  • Location: Brunswick, ME

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build, install, and perform maintenance on all sets for all productions
  • Work load-ins, load-outs, and all strikes for all productions
  • Assist with maintaining and repairing all equipment, supplies, and stock items
  • Assist with the daily cleaning and upkeep of the scene shop and its equipment
  • Attend/assist with all run-throughs, backstage prep, all technical rehearsals, performances, load ins, and strikes as scheduled
  • Participate in MSMT events as needed and/or required
  • Adhere to all MSMT policies and procedures including Covid 19 Guidelines & Safety protocols
  • Drive MSMT vehicles and box trucks
  • Have a positive and respectful attitude
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and respectful working environment
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Production and MSMT Annual Staff
